Aluminum Snow roof rake Mar 10, 2010 This product actually works well. I used it after the blizzard of 2010 in the DC area. I used it after I already had ice dams on my roof more than a week after the 2 snow storms were over. It was very effective at getting the dampened snow off my roof. Of course it doesn' cut through ice dams. . I didn't notice damage to my shingles with using this product. The rake didn't fall apart either, it held up under the weight of the snow I was pulling. Be prepared to shovel all that snow that you pull down off your roof! I have a rambler so I didn't have to use all of the pole attachments. The rake handle has some flexibility to it when extended with the extra lengths of poles. Assembly was not hard either, the directions were easy to follow. I recommend it especially if you have an older home or one that doesn't have proper air sealing and insulation in the attic.
This thing moves the snow!!! Mar 08, 2010 Went out today to use this for the first time. The snow is extremely wet and HEAVY. Taking less than an hour to clear 10" of wet snow from a 24'x48'foot building. I was able to reach all I needed to and still had an extension left. Using one section of scaffold I was able to get my line of sight just right and comfortably work. I recommend this item.
Works Great! Feb 26, 2010 Like others have said, do yourself a favor and replace the hardware before using. After that is taken care of, it works awesome and is a breeze to use, especially with the rollers. I would have given 5 stars except for the shoddy hardware.
Worked great for me. Feb 26, 2010 I was a bit reluctant to buy after reading some negative reviews but I did not experience any of the problems cited. It is light and maneuverable and quite strong. The bolts did not break or work lose. The sections do snap together but you have to push the buttons down far enough. A piece of metal such as a screwdriver helps. I wanted more than 21 feet so I made my own 6 foot extension with a piece of PVC pipe which is the perfect size for this. If you want to do this just drill a hole through one wall of the PVC pipe about 6 inches from the end, insert the pole end with the rubber handle removed, line up the pole hole with your drilled hole, and then drill the rest of the way through the other side. Use a bolt to join your extension to the pole.
Right job, Right product, Right price Feb 25, 2010 I bought this snow rake because I had just installed new shingles and did not want to rake the sand coating off the shingles when removing the snow. This is exactly what I needed: An effective, right-size (24"), light aluminum but well-built rake, lots of handle length (up to 21 feet in 5 foot increments), correctly contoured to "catch" snow for removal, AND TWO ROLLERS THAT KEEP THE CUTTING EDGE OFF THE NEW SHINGLES so I don't rake the eave troughs full of sand in just a couple of snow removals, ruining my shingles in the process. Wish I could have had this thing 40 years ago.
DON'T::: 1.--wait too long to remove snow. If there is melting, re-freezing and hardened snow crusts, you'll beat this (and any snow rake) to pieces trying to remove "snow". This is a snow rake, not an ice rake. 2.--(don't)try to move too much snow in a single rake stroke. That is hard on the rake, to say nothing about hard on yourself. Take reasonable sized bites, oftener, and you'll enjoy cleaning your roof without killing yourself. 3.--(don't)pull the rake straight down the roof line, but pull slightly diagonally so that one end of the rake clears the roof before the other and this AVOIDS the entire bottom rake edge from falling into the eave trough, hooking it and possibly damaging it.
Another thing I really like is that with just a bit smaller bites, I find I can "steer" where the snow lands by accelerating the pull in the direction I want the snow to land, for example, beyond a bush, or even a front step.
I love this product in spite of the fact that I have a quite a bit of work connected with it: 168 feet of roof line to contend with.
Enjoy! A.V. Edgerton, MN
